Simtyso Guitar Strap with Leather Ends Coffee Color

The Simtyso guitar strap got my attention straight away.  How often do you see a brand name with a name so close to yours after all?  But its excellent name is not the only thing that commends this guitar strap.  It is a nylon strap of the type most brands produce in the lower most affordable price point.

When I got my first guitar, I put the bulk of my budget into the guitar itself but still needed a few basic accessories to get off on a good start. Since you’re not supposed to hold your guitar but need to keep your hands free to pick, strum and move along the fretboard, a guitar strap is essential because a strap allows you to play with your hands free seated or standing. Back then I searched Amazon and found a few highly regarded budget straps. In the end I got an Ernie Ball strap which ended up being ok.  But after using the Simtyso on a variety of guitars I much prefer this one.

The Strap

On paper, the strap seems much the same as all the other straps in this category. It’s a two-inch wide nylon strap with leather ends.  The big difference of course is that these ends are suede which is a little nicer than plastic or plain leather.  In addition, the strap has a pin type badge riveted at one end for decoration. The opposite end has a couple of holes with metal rings and some leather lacing making this strap a bit more festive than others in its price-range.

Other than the decoration which might not be important to everyone, this is strap is also better made. The Simtyso strap is not glossy and feels more like a thick rough raw cotton so there is quite a bit more friction and grip. Typically, nylon straps are shiny and have low friction making them slippery. This is fine for a light-weight acoustic or Fender stratocaster type guitar but when you have a heavier guitar (a Les Paul is a good example) there is a tendency for a slippery strap to allow the guitar to nosedive. One of my three guitars does nosedive on the Ernie Ball strap and needs to be constantly adjusted while I am playing. The Simtyso strap keeps the guitar balanced and doesn’t pull down or try and tug on my tshirt.

I always use strap locks. But I noticed the ends on this strap have quite small holes and are a tight fit on the buttons on an electric guitar. They latch to the guitar easily and would require some pretty hard treatment to dislodge them. I actually had more difficulty attaching my strap locks because of the tight fit which isn’t a bad thing.

The strap adjusts across a broad range of lengths which makes this a good fit for all kinds of people. It can go really short for kids to quite tall people like myself. It’s quick and easy to adjust in a few seconds while the same friction on the strap that prevents it nosediving also prevents the strap from slipping and lengthening if you move around while playing.

The Amazon product page says there is a pocket for storing your pick. I couldn’t find one. But I found the lacing through the two rivets on one of the suede ends can hold a couple of regular and Jazz III XL picks easily. The smallest traditional Jazz III is a bit small while my large thick triangle primetone pick is a little large. So picks close to regular size can be stowed there.

Conclusion

This is the best nylon strap I have used. It has a rougher cotton type finish that makes it grippy so even heavier guitars stay put. It’s similarly priced but a  little nicer than other entry level straps in this price range. It neither slips as do most nylon straps, nor does it grab and drag your t-shirt down on one side. Its metal badge is slightly decorative. Although I have to add that some people may not like the badge because they may be afraid that it might scratch the finish on their guitar if they’re not careful. It can also stow a couple of regular size picks.

I keep my guitars on a stand with the strap attached ready to grab and use at a moment’s notice. This strap is quick and easy to adjust and use, making it useful if you have a spare guitar that other people might play. And, as I said earlier, it is a great first strap for someone starting out or on a tight budget.
